The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance
The middle school students at Kappa Vi academy and NYCHA have been taking part in the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Environmentor After School Program. They have been oyster gardeners for two locations on Jamaica Bay on the Rockaway shoreline. They have been learning about the conservation efforts the oysters can provide in improving the water quality on Jamaica bay. The students go out in waders to retrieve their net and collect data each month. So far of the 50 oysters being studied we have 7 dead ones. Let's hope they survive the cold winter in rockaway!

The Harlem River Ecology Center now offers an oyster workshop program as part of their school field-trip series at the Center. The workshop incorporates discussion, a video screening of an exciting short video about
oysters from their "Videos for Learning Library" and a hands-on activity in the field where the kids help collect
data. To learn more, please contact
Ludger K Balan, Executive Director, (718) 901-3331.

Rocking The Boat’s On Water Program was requested to help reintroduce oysters to the Bronx River. This is a way to help the River because oysters filter feed and in doing so, help to reduce pollution in the water. This is just one way that Rocking the Boat students are helping to clean up the River and, at the same time, bringing Eastern American oysters back from local extinction. Rocking the Boat works with scientists from Parks Department's Natural Resources Group. (Read more)
