If you were registered to receive oysters in June but have not yet done so, please contact Katie to arrange to pick them up in August or September. (k.moshersmith@gmail.com)
Oyster gardening provides a unique opportunity for you to directly observe the dynamic marine environment of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. Despite the negative effects of combined sewer overflows, industrial pollution, dredging of benthic habitats, and non-point source runoff; the Estuary still sustains a tremendous abundance of marine life.
WHEN YOU BECOME AN OYSTER GARDENER, YOU ARE HELPING THE ESTUARY BY:
• Growing oysters to increase the stock of these important bivalves to the estuary
• Joining with citizens, scientists, and environmental advocates to help enhance the health of the estuary
• Learning about the variety of organisms that live in the estuary
OYSTERS ARE IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF OUR ESTUARY BY:
• Providing habitat for juvenile fish like striped bass, blue crabs, and tautog
• Filtering up to 30 gallons of water per day to help remove suspended solids, improve water clarity, and enhancing conditions for the growth of underwater grasses
Oyster Gardeners contribute to the health of the Hudson-Raritan Estuary. The oysters you grow will increase the brood stock of oysters in the Estuary and make the important first steps towards increasing the population of this keystone species.
